The Right:Ratio

You might have just read the title and by thinking? What? What’s he on about?

Let me explain…

I am talking about Aspect Ratio. This is, in plain terms the dimensions of an image on the screen. (the ratio of the width to the height of an image or screen)

Here I talk about them in more detail, also talk about the NEWEST Ratio on the block, and it’s doing bits.

Popular Ratios in Film and TV

There are many different types of Aspect Ratios used for all types of films and videos these days and each is used for a different reason.

This Ratio was standard back in the day to suit the screens that the images were being viewed on. (old square crappy monitors.)  17-inch-4-3-Wall-Mount-Desktop-Touchscreen-VGA-TFT-Monitor-DW-170G-1-

This is probably the most popular Aspect Ratio now, with all cameras/camcorders and mobile phones all shooting 16:9 as default. As HD (High Definition) was rolled out this Ratio soon took over from 4:3 and till now is still the big boy in TV and Video.  aspect-ratio

2.35:1 or 2.39:1

Wooee! This is my favourite ratio. I just think when filmed with the intention of using this ratio is looks the best and people just know what you’re about.  This ratio is standard in Film. It’s also the anamorphic ratio, Basically, you shoot a stretched image and the squash it back down and then it looks normal. this changes the look and adds extra details that are more aesthetically appealing. Pictures explain more. 02-squished-anamorphic-portrait03-unsquished-anamorphic-portrait

This is the classic square. Obviously, very popular due to Instagram. This Aspect Ratio isn’t really used much in film and TV, but sometimes people break the rules, E.g. Kendrick Lemar – King Kunta music video…

This is the new kid that’s just popped up. I love it.

It’s a mix of 16:9 and 2.35:1, which is just completely ideal.

The first time this ratio was used was in 1954 on VERA CRUZ, but up until 2013, we haven’t really seen it used in major productions. Here are a few of the BIG ones that are now using this format.

House of Cards (2013)

Marco Polo (2014)

Jurassic World (2015)

The Crown (2016)

Stranger Things (2016)

A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017)

Fargo (Season 3 – 2017)

Now with all that said, I must say there is no industry standard. Different Aspect Ratios are used depending on where it is being shown, who filmed it, what they want to use it for and more. It’s completely up to the creators.

Personally,  I think I will start using 2.00:1 as I feel it’s the right fit for my work, but probably not all the time.

Now, I need a beer, IT’S SO HOT! IM MELTING.

Why online video is SUPER important for you and your business?

Opening Paragraph about how much time people spend online and much much of that is video?

I love the internet, I consume it now like it’s part of my daily diet. The main reason is it’s home to some of the best ways to learn, share and gather information.

On average now people are spending over upwards of 20 hours a week online, with the rise of people having mobiles and tablets, the web is more accessible now than it ever has been before.

I love video, some might say that I consume too much video via the internet, but with how easy it is, it’s hard not to be obese due to the endless amounts of video we are seeing on virtually every app or website. It’s fair to say that video is huge, one organisation are predicting that Internet video will account for 79% of global Internet traffic by 2020 – up from 63% in 2015. At the moment 55% of people watch videos online every day.

So what’s the point in video and why is so useful for a business to succeed, aye?

I’ll throw you some facts and figures to try and convince you that you need a video, at least somewhere on your website. *Warning* This is a blatant pitch selling you our video production services.

The fatty facts!

Viewers retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video compared to 10% when reading it in text.

Including video in a landing page can increase conversion by 80%

77% of professional marketers and SMB owners are seeing results with video marketing.

Online shoppers who view demo videos are 1.81x more likely to purchase than non-viewers

59% of executives agree that if both text and video are available on the same topic, they are more likely to choose video.

I could go on and drown you in more boring facts, but the bottom line is, video will be great for your company, products and website. INVEST IN VIDEO!

New Season – New Me!

Well, we are here. Winter came, and now we’ve made it to spring. Personally I get pretty miserable during the winter, and I put It down to a few things, I.e – The weather being absolutely 100% terrible, It’s bulking season so I feed myself the wrong types of food and feel bad because of it. Cue, classic white girl blog post below!

But with the clocks springing forward (pun intended) I have chosen to set a few goals and (hopefully) complete them in the next month. I am doing this in the hope that I somehow become a better bloke?

  1. Changing My Diet  So I have done this before and I consider myself somewhat ‘Experienced’, but never the less I am still going to cut out the bad chocolate that fills my belly and in the words of Ed Sheeran, start eating Kale! – Side note, NO ONE FUCKING LIKES KALE. We eat it so then after the week we can ‘Treat’ ourselves with that bag of Minstrels we’ve had our eyes on for the last week.
  2. Save some fucking dolla bro! – This is BIG Juan! The aim is to get to the last week of April without having to hunt for a few extra pounds just so I can buy a pot noodle at lunch…..FUCK.
  3. LAUNCH MY NEW WEBSITE! YAY – So, for the last month I have been building my website, which essentially just photos of me looking like a fucking winner! But honestly this is big, I’ve been trying to get this up for the last year and now the time has come!
  4. Photo a Day Challenge – So this one is pretty simple in the fact that I want to be uploading a photo a day to insta. The purpose of this is to get myself taking more pictures with my camera, understanding the camera and more importantly learning about composition and  developing my own style.

So that’s me out.  Welcome to the start of spring and watch this space to see my new PB at Benchpress, Deadlift, Back Squat. #blessed #motivated.

Also I shaved my beard.

I lost something.

Right, let me get straight to the point. Dated my best friend of 10 years for just under a year, due to reasons out of my control, we are not together, nor are we even speaking to each other.

At first I dealt with it okay, but time given me a beating and let’s just say, I miss her more than I could have imagined.

In my sadness, my pride is still riding on it’s high horse, I refuse to let her know how I am doing. But I expressed myself with something I am actually good at.

I have a battle in my mind about making the video, and still having half a mind not to upload it. But I felt like I need to get something off my chest, even if it’s only posted here, which is most likely.

Getting Started with 3D…

I started a new job about 3 months ago, I left my previous employer because I wanted to expand my skillset and move onto new  more challenging things.

I have always been interested in 3D modelling and animation, but never really chased it or had the opportunity to have a crack, the only time was when I was working on a project for a client and the options I gave just weren’t cutting it for them, so I felt ballsy and went for a play in Cinema 4D. Alas, I made my first 3D animation, it was okay, but purely a play about and with luck created something they liked.

The last 4 months I’ve been trying to fill my mind with all things 3D, and just the immersing myself in Blender, which is the software the company I’m at now use for 3D project. Blender is great, it’s free and there is so much help out there for it, it’s even used in some big production houses.

This week was the first time I actually used it on the job and I got very excited so that’s why I am writing a blog post about it.

I was asked to model a handrail and concrete slab for a bigger project. At first I was a bit hesitant because I was really sure how i’d tackle it, but with a bit of help from an experienced colleague, I got started.

I did have a building drawing to get all the measurements from and the angles, so wasn’t completely lost. bottom-brickHere I made the concrete slab, which everything starts from. I started with a plane and then extruded it to get the depth. Then added a spilt down the middle and raised it slightly to get a pointy top almost, if you like.

no-glass-2Above is where I put in the posts and handrails. The post were relatively easy, but the hand rail wasn’t, I had many failed attempts but then nailed it  no-glass-3complete-3I then put in the glass windows that go inbetween the the posts. I also added a glass material to these, but you’ll see that I the full render. complete-2with-materialsfinal-renderHere’s the full render, I put a stone material on the slab and metal material on the posts and hand rails. Then made a world environment to give it a ‘real’ feel. It doesnt look much but I am pretty happy with what I did. It’s going to take a lot of learning to master 3D work but I am hoping to really take of this year in my learning and make some great work! 🙂

The worth of words…

How many times have you heard the phrase “sticks and stones may break bones, but words will never hurt me”, Or something like that. Basically saying that insults and the things people say to you, won’t break your spirit.

The last year has been a real eye opener in terms of relationships and how I communicate with others. One of the biggest things that’s stuck with me is, words are worthless. Again, Words are Worthless. They don’t count for anything. I know this might not make sense, but read on, I’ll explain.

I was listening to a podcast about six months ago, and one guy mentioned that people shouldn’t put much value in words. At first I was a bit confused and took me a while to get my head around it. But here’s the thing, you can listen to what people say, but the action behind the words is what you should put the most value on. E.g, would you rather someone tells you that they ‘love you’ or actually shows you that they do.

Wouldn’t it be so much better, if they showed you that they loved you or cared about you instead of just telling you. The actions that people do define who they are, and they should show you who they are.

People won’t tell you who they really are with there words, but they will truly show you who they are with their actions. A lot like that bloke who is always giving it the big one about how he’s gonna distribute his fist around the place, when actually when it comes down to it, he does nothing. He comes across as a big ballsy bloke with his words, but a coward with his actions.

A slightly different example, people wont tell you what they want, but if you look at their history and actions and then you can make a judgement on what the person really wants and will do.

In summary, try not to put weight behind peoples words, people will let you down. Instead, realise that peoples actions should show you how they really feel/think. Ultimately, this will show you what kind of people you should keep in your life and what kind of people you might not want to stick around. I am not saying stop listening to people, that’s just completely dumb. Just don’t take them for more than they are. Just words.

P.s. This is my first blog post, It might be waffley, I tried to keep in short and to the point, hope you take something away. I know this changed how I responded to peoples words. Again, first post, but they’ll always get better and more interesting.
